During this 2 hour ride, you will have many panoramic views of Volcano Concepcion and Lake Cocibolca.
We will start our ride through a coffee plantation and forest, then you will have the chance to discover the slopes of volcano Maderas and see where rice and beans are cultivated, before reaching an unforgettable lookout with a view across the entire Island of Ometepe. This tour is excellent for wildlife viewing - we almost always see monkeys - and for experiencing rural life - on our way back, we ride through banana plantations and past the backyards of local village communities.
When the water level of the lake is low enough, it is also possible to ride back along the beach for an extra hour.
Add the “swim with your horse” option to intensify this unique Ometepe experience at the end of your tour.
Choose your guided tour
Never: First time in the saddle
Beginner: Ridden only occasionally (vacations) but cannot post (at trot gait)
Intermediate: Has trotted and cantered in arenas, but does not horseback ride on a regular basis and is not
comfortable galloping in open space without guidance
Advanced: Knows how to ride each gait (walk, trot, canter and gallop), has good control of the horse and rides
on a regular basis
You will need for any of our horse tours:
Long pants, closed shoes, a hat, some cash to pay entrance fees and beer, sun screen, swim suit
Get in the saddle, and after a 45 minutes ride (trot or soft gallop) along a dirt road, we will be riding uphill for an hour at a walking pace. Let your horse guide you through the rocky trails while you enjoy the fauna and flora. Once we arrive at our spot, we tie the horses up under the shade of the trees and walk the last 10 minutes over mossy rocks to reach the waterfall. There we will relax and the bravest can have a very refreshing swim before we descend once again to the dirt road. From there we ride back to the ranch at whatever gait you feel comfortable with.
The “San Ramon Waterfall” ride is gentle, relaxing and incredibly beautiful during the rainy season.
We do not recommend this tour in April and May, as the ride is very difficult for horses due to the heat at this time of the year. Additionally, the flow of the waterfall is very low making it a less interesting experience during these months.
You can also add the 30 minutes “swim with your horse” option to relax and cool down in the lake before going back to the ranch.
In this tour, we will be riding on the shore of the lake for about an hour. Then we leave our horses at the house of a local family whilst we walk down the lake to discover the most beautiful petroglyphs (rock carvings) on Ometepe.
Since those specific petroglyphs are under water several months a year, this tour is only possible when the water level of the lake is low. You will feel like an explorer as you see the many amazing petroglyphs representing faces, animals, insects, and more.
Besides the guarantied fantastic view along the lakeshore, this tour is perfect if you want to improve your horseback riding. Depending on your abilities and wishes, you will also have plenty of opportunities for galloping.
Add the “swim with your horse” option to cool down in the lake on your way back.
We will leave the ranch in the morning and ride about 7km to reach Santo Domingo Beach. Enjoy a nice canter along this long sandy beach with splendid views of both volcanoes.
When the day gets hot, it will be time to tie the horses up, take off their saddles, and get ready to cool down. Then, on the back of your horse, you will ride into the lake until it is deep enough for your horse to start swimming. This relaxing and very special experience will stay in your mind forever
This tour takes you to the end of the beach at Finca San Juan de la Isla where you can enjoy a cool drink while our horses rest a little.
The tour ends up with a lunch (not included) in Santa Cruz village before the final ride back to the ranch.
This tour of about 6 to 8 hours starts at 8am and is only appropriate for advanced riders with regular horseback riding experience as we will be galloping for several hours.
It is the most complete tour including high adrenalin gallops along the beach, adventure off the beaten track, as after the first 2 hours, we set off in search of “hidden villages” which are only accessible by foot or on horseback. You will also see how local people live, discover petroglyphs (rock carvings) and stone statues from the pre-Columbian past of Ometepe, enjoy relaxing moments in nature, observing and listening to wildlife, and if the day is hot, we will swim with our horses on our way back to the ranch.
In order to give the horses a rest, we will stop in Balgue for lunch (lunch is not included).
Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy this unusual experience!
You will ride down to the beach where we will tie our horses up for the time it takes to remove their saddle and to prepare ourselves. Then, on the bare backs of our horses, we enter the lake until the water is deep enough for the horses to swim. This relaxing and special experience will stay in your mind forever.
You can add this 30 minutes option to any tour of your choice.
This option may not be available when the lake is too high.
We can organize any other private horse tour such as exploring the coffee plantation and petroglyphs of Finca Magdalena, visiting el Pital, also called the chocolate paradise, or riding under the full moon.
You request, we organize!
